What were we up to this week?
It was a beautiful week for fall adventures!
Mrs Jennings had the kids playing some "volleyball" in gym class!
The kids had a great time trying to keep the balloon from hitting the ground.
Another wonderful book by our illustrator of the month showed up in our classroom.
Sooo... of course our monster fingers were back to help us to make some more words.
Next we had to feed the monster.
We had to be careful so the monster wouldn't eat our fingers.
The last step was being a "sneaky" monster and adding in new letters to make a new word. So tricky!
In the afternoon we were busy measuring monsters.
But this time we were using pattern blocks to see which block we needed the most of to measure the monsters.
We were back Tuesday for more learning fun!
More monster fun popped up as we read this sweet story of a girl looking for her monster.
We went looking for our monsters too!
They were hiding under our cups!
Once we found our "letter monsters", we had to write down the letter we found.
They loved this game!
Our monstrous fun was back in the afternoon... We made patterns for our monsters to stand on out of colorful noodles.
The kids were also busy painting with noodles!
The kids couldn't believe the fun textures they were creating.
And they couldn't believe how messy they were!
The smiles and adventures were just beginning...
A pumpkin patch popped up at Zion!
We started off by reading The Plumply, Dumply Pumpkin. The tiger is looking for the perfect pumpkin at the pumpkin patch.
We were searching for beginning sound pumpkins in our classroom.
Once we found it, we had to write down the lowercase letter to match.
Word bingo was another activity the kids enjoyed.
Once they found the word, they marked it with a pumpkin seed.
Then it was time to look for our perfect pumpkins.
They each picked out a special little pumpkin.
They were so proud of their unique pumpkins that they picked.
In the afternoon, we did some investigating of our pumpkins.
First we used a special scale to weigh them.
Most of them weighed about 1 pound.
Some of them didn't even weigh 1/2 of a pound!
We also measured them with our linking cubes.
Next up we borrowed some pumpkins from our classroom and weighed them.
They were A LOT heavier!
We had to use our muscles to pick them up!
We also checked to see how tall they were compared to our little ones.
The kids were very excited to paint a picture of their pumpkin.
They looked very carefully at the different details of the pumpkin.
The perfect pumpkin masterpieces!
Thursday we headed to chapel.
We had a visitor from Chapel of the Cross lead our chapel.
He talked about Martin Lutheran, Reformation, and Luther's symbol.
The kids got to help color the symbol.
Your child should have one to color too!
The kids were very excited to hear this familiar story! Some of them even read along with me!
Square pumpkins showed up in our classroom too! They were hiding some letter seeds.
They had to write down the letter they found under the square pumpkin on our tablet.
A new friendly face showed up to help us with our reading stations.
This is Mrs. Donner. She is our technology coordinator at Zion. She will be stopping by our classroom to help out sometimes.
Thursday she helped us with some balance tricks.
First the kids had to pick two items out of the trick our treat bucket.
A word was hiding on each item.
They had to write down the word they thought would be the heaviest.
Then they had to test their predictions.
Rhyming pumpkins were hiding in the hallway.
The kids had to match up the pumpkins.
In the afternoon, we were doing some more balancing.
After balancing things from the trick or treat bucket,
the kids were SO excited to see if their pumpkin would float!
They were shocked at what they discovered...
Their faces just lit up when they saw their pumpkin floating!
Friday we were all set to head to the gym...
More balloon adventures!
The kids had a great time playing volleyball and dancing to the music.
Back in the classroom it was time to do our Friday dance party.
I just love watching their faces break out in smiles when they sing this song.
Such wonderful friendships we have already formed this year.
In math we were busy playing an exciting dice game to see which bucket would get the most pumpkin seeds.
After rolling the dice, we had to figure out which number was bigger.
Then we drew that many seeds in our cube shaped buckets. After everyone rolled, we added up all of the seeds. The pumpkin monster ate the biggest number.
The kids were very excited to help me read this familiar poem.
Then it was time to read some words from the bucket.
Once they read the word,
they had to work together to help spell the word.
They even found some very familiar words! Sam found the word "SAM" hiding in the bucket!
We also went hunting for some more beginning sound pumpkins in the hallway.
In the afternoon, we grabbed some of the biggest pumpkins we could find.
First we weighed the pumpkins.
The heaviest one was 9 pounds!
Some friends wanted to find the littlest one.
It weighed two pounds.
We discovered even if it was the heaviest pumpkin, it might not be the tallest.
The kids also had a blast making gates for their 5 little pumpkins.
It took a lot of teamwork to get their gates to stand!
It was a great way to end the week!
We hope next week is filled with lots of special treats (and maybe just a few tricks!).
