This is the Week that Kindergarten Built...

Whew!  We were very busy this week!
Take a peek into our exciting week...
More fun with Mrs. Jennings in the gym to start off our week.

The kids did different frisbee challenges.

This one was to see how far they could throw!

After reading Commotion in the Ocean, we had a little fun with ocean creatures in our classroom.

The kids had to search on the carpet for different sea creatures.

Once they found one,

they had to read the word that was hidden on the bottom.
We also went hunting for sea creatures around the room.

We had to write down the heart words that were hiding on the sea creatures.

In the afternoon we were busy adding ocean creatures.
The kids had to spin to see how many were in the water and the next number they spun got added to it.

Happy swimmers!

The kids were also busy organizing the sea creatures.

First they rolled the dice.

Then they decided which sea creature belonged in that row.

Tuesday we had our first MASKED READER!

The kids can only ask the Masked Reader yes or no questions.
After 5 questions the kids guessed it was... Mr. Marolf!
He read to us a story about a dragon who ate noodles on Tuesdays!
The kids LOVED this new activity and can't wait for our next visitor.

In math we were busy catching some fish!

We tossed our "net" on the 10 school of fish and then had to figure out how many extra swam away.
The last step was finding the teen number that matched the total number of fish.

Next on the agenda was reading this AMAZING true story about an octopus that escaped from his aquarium.  The kids LOVED this story!
For one of our reading stations, the kids had to search for the octopuses that escaped!

Once they found an octopus, they had to find the word hidden on the bottom and circle it on their paper.
The kids also went searching for octopus families.

First they had to spin to find out what word family to look for.  Then they had to go pick out an octopus and write it down.

The kids also met Otto the Octopus.

They slid a list of words across his chest.

Then they had to write down the word as "easy to read" or "hard to read".

This  station has a bunch of sea creatures swimming around.

When they flipped the cards over, they found a mixed up sentence.

The team had to put the sentence together.

They did such a great job with this!

These two boys have been waiting for a nice day to test out the ramp they built.

The kids LOVED getting a turn to try it too!

Our new illustrator of the month is Peter H. Reynolds. We read this beautiful book about being a flexible thinker who used her imagination to create sky color.

The kids then teamed up to make an ocean mural.

I was very impressed with how well they compromised!

I loved listening to them talk about the different colors they created together!

They definitely created some masterpieces!

Wednesday we had a blast dancing with Mrs. Crumrine.

She held up a card and the kids had to do that specific kind of dance.

Check out these dance moves!

The kids had a blast!

After talking about where sea creatures live, it was time to talk about where we live!

The kids worked together to create these houses.

They each took a turn picking a block and reading the word on the block.

They were also busy delivering items to the correct house.

The beginning sound of the picture had to match the letter on the house.  Then they had to practice writing that letter correctly.
The kids enjoyed reading and looking at the beautiful illustrations in The Napping House.

Then they had to match the words up to the right napping house.

If they did not have the word, it went to the sleeping house!

Mrs. Donner came and joined us too!  She helped us "fly" to our houses on Google maps.

She also showed them a map of the United States, Missouri, and then flew to. our school and other special landmarks.
In the afternoon, Ms. Steinbacher came to help us with our memory verse.

They played some fun games that got them moving

and they practiced their memory verse at the same time!

In the classroom the kids were practicing adding on to 10 as they built a napping house.
They each received a stack of 10 squares.

Then they rolled the dice to see how many blocks to add onto their 10.

Once they made their creation,
they had to write down the teen number they created.

Thursday we were back for more adventures!

Pastor Rouland was back with his buddy Rupert!

They reminded us about Holy Week and the events getting ready for Easter.
Back in the classroom we were busy talking about the three little pigs and how they built their houses.

During math we were busy adding on either bricks or straw to the 10 parts of the house.
Once the house was built,
The kids had to find the teen number that matched the number of blocks we used to build the house.  The best part was "blowing" the number down!

These little pigs joined us for our reading stations.

First they had to go into the house and find a pig.
Then they had to read the word on the bottom of the pig.
They had to read the word to their friends and find it on their paper.

With Mrs. Collins the kids were practicing handwriting with the help of some bricks!
First they had to pick out a letter brick.
Then they brought the letter back to the table and told their friends what letter (or word) to write.
Next, they added it onto their team's blocks.

When they were done they had created quite a brick house!

In the afternoon the kids had a challenge of creating houses for the three little pigs.
Once they created their house,
they used a fan to see if they could BLOW it over!

The kids were also busy making groups with pigs.

First they took a mud puddle number.
Then they had to try to fit 10 pigs in the mud puddle.

The leftovers that were off of the puddle helped adding on from 10.

When they were all done, they had to practice writing the teen number.

Friday Home Depot arrived to help us build houses.
First we took a "purchase order" and hid it in our apron.

The kids had to figure out which number was missing in order to figure out how many houses to build.

We started with 10 houses, so the kids had to figure out how many more houses we needed.

After they added up their houses,

we wrote down the number that was missing.

We were also busy building words!
The first person took a word card and read it to their friend.
The next person had to try to write the word without looking.

The third person had to pick up the right letter bricks to make the word.
Then they had to deliver the blocks to the fourth person on the team.

The fourth person had to put the word together.

They did a great job of working as a team.

The kids also worked together to drive to different word houses on the map.

The took turns putting out word houses, writing words, and driving to the words.

Another activity was building stick houses.

First they pulled out a sight word stick.

Then they kept adding onto their house.

Some teams chose to work together to build one big house!

They made some amazing houses!

Mrs. Collins was in the hall helping the kids deliver "letters".
First they found a word, and then they had to pick out the correct letters to slide into the envelope.

Next they slid the envelope into the mailbox.
Once they delivered the envelope to the right house,

they opened the envelope and put the word together.

In the afternoon the kids had a BLAST building their own dream houses!

They had some very creative ideas!

I think they could have kept building for hours and hours!

Give your child a shoebox and scraps of randomness and let them have it!

We have some future designers and architects in this class.

Finally we had stop because...

we had another WONDERFUL Friday reader!

Hudson's mom came to read to help celebrate his birthday!

It was such a special way to end our busy week!

Stay tuned... you never know what might happen next week!
