Our SENSEsational Week!

Hats off to a GREAT week!

We definitely had some happy campers this week!

After reading The Most Magnificent Thing, we talked about what it meant to invent something.

Then the kids set to work to become inventors.

Their imaginations just took off!
Some followed a plan.
Others came up with their own ideas.

Whatever they made,
they were very proud of their inventions.
Our imaginations also helped us to create icky insects.

The children used play-doh along with other things like toothpicks, beans, etc

to create some very interesting insects.

We also used insects to help us practice our adding.

They had to sit the bugs on the stars and then figure out how many more bugs they needed to make 5.

Mrs. Helmkamp led chapel this week with the story of Noah.  The kids LOVED helping her tell the story!
Thanks again for your amazing generosity!  At this rate our school may be able to sponsor 2 years worth of meals for the children in Cambodia.
We read a GREAT book about a boy who felt invisible because nobody ever noticed him. We talked about how we should also make sure our friends never feel invisible.  We also talked about if we feel like we are invisible, we can be assertive and find someone else who might feel the same way.

We made some invisible Ii's and even made our name invisible.

We were AMAZED when everything became visible when we painted!

We read another wonderful book about friendship called Stick and Stone.  Here is a short video of the story.
After reading the story, we went searching for a stone.

When we found the perfect stone, we decorated it with Sharpie markers.

They then used sticks to create whatever they could think of.

These kids love building and creating with sticks!
We also had fun balancing rocks.

Not just any rocks.  Rocks that had the alphabet written on them.

We had to see which letter was the heaviest.

Camping Day arrived with lots of excitement!

The kids had a great time in gym class as they danced

and jogged

and ran!

But watch out for the BEAR!

They had to make it safely to the "tent" before the bear caught them.

This little light of mine...

We used flashlights to help us find letters all around the classroom.

After they found the letter, they had to write it on a dry erase board.

More alphabet fun as we made letters out of sticks!

We played a matching tent game too.

They had to match their "log" to the tent that had the same letter on it.

Rest time was a "quiet" reading time.

The kids really enjoyed reading with their flashlights.

Our SENSEsational Camping Day continued with our S'more expert... Mr. Debrick!

He helped the kids each roast a marshmallow.

They had to be very patient
before they could start smelling the marshmallow cooking.
Some kids did not like the SMELL of the sterno!

But they all LOVED the taste of the s'more!

It was a little messy,

but SO good!

Mrs. Helmkamp stopped by to help us with our sense of hearing.  We had to listen to figure out the different camping sounds.

Next up was using our sense of SIGHT.
The kindergartners got their backpacks already.

Then they went on an "I SPY" hike with Mrs. Collins.

They started off looking for a feather.

Next up was  the letter C.
The kids worked hard looking for a rock.
Their hike wasn't finished yet!
They found some very special sticks.
These sticks were shaped like a cross!

Last stop was the fishing pond!
They had to catch a letter

and say its name and the sound that it makes.
This was  a catch and release pond, so they did have to let the fish go!
We were sad to see our SENSEsational Camping Day come to an end...

But our camping fun wasn't done just quite yet.
We sat outside in some camping chairs.

We used our sense of HEARING to listen.

The kids drew pictures of all the things they could hear.

They heard LOTS of crazy preschoolers on the playground!

They did a great job of practicing self-control and using just their ears.
The kids played another matching game with the tents.

This time they had to match beginning sounds of pictures to the right letter.

They also enjoyed playing a rhyming s'more game!
A special story taught the kids how to make a yummy trail mix.

Some kids even figured out how to make a pretend fire with the trail mix!

We finished our camping adventures by going on a bear hunt!

I called out a letter sound and the kids had to find the letter that matched.

They also designed a bear obstacle course.

They had to create their own "bear hunt" obstacle course with wooden blocks.

Finally we went on bear hunt in the hall.

The mama bear had to find her cub!
It was BEARY exciting!

It definitely was a SENSEsational week!

We can hardly wait to see what adventures are headed our way next week...
