A "SOUPER" Short Week!

We were back and ready to go!

Ash Wednesday started off our short week.

Before heading to chapel, Mrs. Crumrine got us moving and shaking!

The kids got to use scarves to keep the beat of the music.

The rest of the crew got to be the band!

Then we headed over to chapel to celebrate Ash Wednesday.  First we boxed up our "ALLELUIAS".

Mrs. Helmkamp led our chapel and reminded us how God made us.  Even when we mess up He still loves us and sent Jesus to die for our sins.

She also gave us a special ribbon to put on our cross.

Next Pastor Rouland came to explain what Ash Wednesday is and why we put ashes on our foreheads or hands.

Then it was our turn to get our ashes to remind us our sins.

What a special way to start off the week!

We continued our reading unit on folktales, with the story of Stone Soup.

Mrs. Collins was busy serving up some alphabet soup for one of our reading stations.
After she scooped out the letters into the bowls,

the kids had to see what letters they got and write them down.

The challenge was to try to make a word with the letters.

Another station we were doing some "stop light" reading.  The kids put the letters on the bowls from green to yellow, to red.

If they made a word, they had to write it down.

The kids were also using hunting for letters hidden on food.

Once they found a letter, they tried to turn that letter into a word!
Mrs. Donner was back to help us with a little Olympic curling action!

The kids took turns pushing the "curling rock".

Then we got out the brooms...

and swept in front of our "curling rock".

Whatever cones they knocked over, they had to read the word that was attached to it.
The kids absolutely LOVED this game!!!

In the afternoon, we were busy making our Lent bulletin board.

First the kids had to roll two dice and add them up.

That's how many giant splotches they got to make!
It was so nice out, we couldn't wait to enjoy the beautiful weather to end our day!
We were serving up more SOUPER adventures on Thursday!

The kids had an AMAZING time turning our classroom into a restaurant!

They even requested some Italian music at our restaurant.  :)

After reading this silly version of Stone Soup

We got to work making our very own stone soup.  First we added some stones.

Then of course the water was next!

Then it was time to add the veggies.

Everybody got to pick one veggie they wanted to add.

We were also busy using magic spoons to make words.

These word wizards took the magic spoons and laid them in front of the chunks.
They wrote down as many words as possible before it was time to rotate.

For math our restaurant was once again open for business.

The chef served up two bowls of food.

The waiter or waitress served up the food to the customers.
We had to add up how much food the customers got.

In the afternoon, we were busy making our Olympic medals.

Before starting our SOUP stations, we read this hilarious book about a SOUP OPERA.  Ask your child about the surprise ending!

We also had another chance to practice adding food.

Building with different sized bowls and cups was also something the kids enjoyed.

They did a great job of working together.

Balancing stones was also on our agenda.

Finally it was time to serve up our Stone Soup!

The kids were all very brave and tried it!

Many kids gave me it two thumbs up.

They even requested seconds!

Good 'til the very last drop!

It was definitely a SOUPER day!
Finally it was time for our our OLYMPIC event!

Friday we got our hearts ready for the KIDS HEART CHALLENGE!

The kids did a great job of working hard for 1 whole hour!

They kept those hearts beating fast.

We did a little dancing.

Some jumping.

Lots of hurdling!

And some hula hooping too!

It was a great way to start off our day!

We continued our Olympic adventures by reading another fabulous Tacky story!
Then we had our own winter Olympics with our reading stations.

The kids had a blast playing ice hockey with the ice cubes!

Hidden inside the ice cubes were words!

Sometimes they could read the words.

Sometimes they had to past the "puck" back and forth until they figured out the mystery word.

They did get splashed a few times!  :)

Next up was ski jumping.

Hidden on these piles of snow were their heart words!

They had to say their heart word before jumping over it.

Out in the hallway we were doing a little bobsled racing.

They sent words flying down the ramp.

Once the words were all down the ramp, they had to put them together to make a sentence.

In the afternoon,  a very special lady arrived to talk about our hearts.

Mrs. Beele popped over from Mrs. Drury's class to talk about how our heart works.

She even showed them a model of a heart.

The kids had sooo many great questions.

A few friends even got to listen their heart using a stethoscope.

We finished off our day painting our Olympic medals.

CURLING was also back.
This time were were shoving the rock towards numbers.

Whatever numbers the player landed closest to, they had to practice writing it.

It was a little tricky to keep the curling stone on target!

It was still an exciting game!

What an AMAZING week we had!
Hang in there...
We will be back next week!
