Without a shadow of a doubt we were ready for a GREAT week!
To get ready for Groundhog Day
we were busy matching groundhogs
to their shadows.
The kids also had a great time making their own shadows.
The kids had a chance to predict if the groundhog would see his shadow. I think their prediction was a little off! :)
With more winter on the way we began talking about mittens.
We measured with mittens
looking for things that were the same
longer and shorter than the mitten.
The kids also got their exercise as they painted mittens with marbles.
They worked hard
to create these beautiful masterpieces.
Of course we had to read The Mitten by Jan Brett and retell the story.
A mitten is not a good home for an animal...
so the kids designed some animal homes out of clay.
We were also busy getting ready for Valentine's Day!
The kids found a new way to paint!
We sprinkled the paper with baking soda
and added food coloring to vinegar!
The kids LOVED the explosion of color!
We also talked about different kinds of people houses and started working on our addresses this week.
Mrs. Helmkamp came and helped the kids "fly" to their houses.
The kids also got to "fly" to school using Google Maps.
We also pretended to deliver mail to each other's houses.
They had to put the alphabet "packages" together
to deliver to the right word on the house.
The kids had a GREAT time
designing their own dream houses out of "loose parts".
We had a lot of houses with swimming pools!
Such creative minds at work!
They were also busy buying and selling houses.
It is definitely a buyer's market!
Home Depot showed up this week too!
The project manager
delivered
a blueprint
to the builder.
The builder had to read the blueprint
and figure out what blocks to use.
Then they put the blocks together to make a word.
The inspector came by
and made sure they did their job correctly.
They wrote the word down to show that
it was a job well done!
The kids also discovered that magnatiles make some amazing houses!
They also discovered building a house
can be quite yummy!
The kids LOVED using graham crackers
and icing to create sweet houses!
It was rather challenging to get the houses to stay.
Each kid had such a unique design.
As challenging as it was to make,
it was definitely worth it! YUMMY!
More house building took place in the afternoon.
Soft blocks were the house building material this time.
The houses keep getting fancier and fancier!
They even put some hard blocks mixed in with the soft blocks for some unique designs.
The best building project we had this week
was the kids designing their houses
out of boxes.
They worked so hard to create some amazing houses!
There truly is no place like home!
