Christmas Adventures

We had quite the learning adventures pop up this week,
and most of them left us smiling!
We kicked off the week talking about elves and making elf sentences.

The kids had to work together to fix the mixed up sentences.

The bonus challenge was to figure out two sentences that got mixed up together!

They were so excited when they figured it out!

The last step was to find the elf that matched their sentence.

Our next reading challenge was to help the elf fix his light bulbs.

Once they got the light bulb letters to make the word

they clicked on the lights to see if they lit up to make a word!
They LOVED this game (I got the lights from the Dollar Store if you want to play the game too!)!

As we talked more about 3-D shapes, we tried to figure out different characteristics of the shapes.

The kids built ramps to see which shapes were good for rolling
and which shapes were good for building with.

They came up with some very unique designs!

It was fun to watch their brains hard at work!
We also used to the shapes to paint with.

We stamped the 3-D shapes to see what "faces" they had.

The flat part of a cone is a circle.

We even used tiny cubes to make tiny square shapes.

We lit our second candle this week; the PEACE candle!

Mrs. Oswald had a special gift to show us... the best gift ever.

The kids tried to guess what could possibly be inside!

It was baby Jesus of course!

Back in the classroom more elf fun showed up.

The kids practiced reading the letters and sounds

but if they got an elf card they had to DANCE!

After reading  this hilarious book,
the kids set to work building their own elf traps.

They each found different ways to build a trap.
I have been told that some of the traps really did work!

In gym, these elves were busy trying to deliver "presents".

We pretended the hula hoops were our houses and had to make sure each hoop had two presents.

But watch out for the Grinch!

The Grinch was busy trying to steal the presents!

We had some special help this week with our service project.

The kids each decorated a canvas bag to put the donated books in.

They used tape to make a design.

Then they painted over the tape.

Each bag ended up with a very unique design!

We were able to donate over 45 books to LFCS Hilltop Child & Family Development Center in North St. Louis County! Thank you SO much for your generosity!

The kids also had fun making special bookmarks to go along with the books.

I couldn't believe how hard and how long they worked to get the bookmarks done.

We were also busy talking about trees this week.

The kids each used green play-dough

and other interesting things to create a tree.

We also let our creative juices flow to create some "Loose Part" Christmas trees.

We ended our week with the GRINCH!

He stole our Christmas trees,

but we worked hard to match them up
and put them back together!
We also did some Grinch aerobics.

The kids really worked hard, some said only GROWN-UPS should be doing these exercises!

Other kids were up for the challenge and didn't want to stop!

That sneaky Grinch was also stealing presents from our classroom!

The kids took turns being the Grinch and hiding the numbers.

The kids had to figure out which number was missing and write it down.

We definitely have some great GRINCH GRINS in this class!

My favorite part of the week was acting out the Christmas story.  Here is a little sneak peek of our special project...

For to us a Child is born. To us a Son is given.
